The Japanese reads, "Sakuran is not a geisha. She's a prostitute (courtesan)."

This is Sakuran, from the manga of the same name by Moyoco Anno. I've been reading it on-and-off for the past month or so. The colors she uses for the title pages are fxxking magnificent, and I thought doing fan art for it would be fun to do since I get to use PRETTY COLORS!!

Oiran (prostitute/courtesan) were around before geisha. Please go here for more info: [link] I'm no expert!

I regret that her outer robe looks like it's closed . . . it should be hanging more open as the obi (sash) is underneath it. Ah, well. Clothing discrepancies (sp?) and awkward headdress aside, I enjoy this. But no, I haven't seen the movie. And this story ain't no Memoirs of a Geisha, either!

Sakuran(c)Moyoco Anno.

Lovely work, galla! I love how you handled all the different patterns and textures you put in there : D.
Thank ye! I never get to play with the markers I have as much as I like, so this was fun to do :D

*after reading that article* I had no idea that Yumi in Rurouni Kenshin and Setsuka in Soul Calibur 3 are oiran.

This is very pretty. I bet it took a while.

Now with more commissions!

Purdy! I just know you can tell whether they're a geisha or a oiran by whether they tie their obi in the back or front.

I'd recommend reading Mineko Iwasaki's biography over Memories of a Geisha, she was the geisha that Arthur Golden(the author) interviewed. A TV Special actually got released last November based on her biography called Hanaikusa but I've yet to find a subtitled version :(

Even now, it calls to me. I can hear the pain, the sorrow, everything it feels. Always.
I remember watching a special on the lives of geisha years ago; and apparently an American woman actually was called an American geisha, after studying them in the '70s. She never went through toe formal training, but guys actually started to request her while she was studying them! [link]
